It is that time of year – No-See-Em season. It is getting warmer and Spring is calling us outdoors! That means it is time for No-See-Ems to emerge.

What is a No-See-Em?
No-See-Ems are small, winged fly-family members known as Ceratopogonidae. A few super fun facts about them below:
- They are tiny, hence the name. No larger than 1/8 of an inch but typically closer to 1/16 of an inch.
- There are ore than 5000 species and they are located everywhere on Earth except Antarctica and the Artic.
- They are the primary pollinators of cocoa plants!
- There are four life stages which take approximately 2 to 6 weeks in our climate (SC Lowcountry).
- Only Females bite humans for blood protein. Males and Females eat nectar.
- They have evolved over time to have excellent sharp mouthparts to pierce skin of their victims.
- No-See-Ems breed in moist soil – like irrigated turf.
- Like mosquitoes, they spread disease. Yuck.
- They loathe the smell of cedar.
